Born and raised in Oneida, New York, Tom was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church. He graduated from Blair Academy in 1984, a boarding school in Blairstown, New Jersey. After high school Tom attended Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1988 with a B.A. in English and a minor in Sociology. While at Susquehanna, Tom received the “Crusader Award” for his weekly opinion column published in the school’s weekly newspaper.
Upon graduation from Susquehanna, Tom worked as an alcohol and drug counselor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Reading, Pennsylvania for one year. He then attended the University of South Florida in Tampa where he earned his Master’s degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Social and Elite Deviance. Tom’s Master’s degree thesis focused on role identity transformation among heroin addicts in methadone treatment programs.
During graduate school Tom and Kim joined the First United Church of Tampa where they were actively involved in anti-war and other social justice activities. During their time at First United, Tom got the “call” to ministry and entered Eden Seminary, where he was awarded the Grauer Award for Pastoral Promise.
During the summer of 2008, the Warren-Miller family spent three months traveling throughout Latin America. They were a month in Guatemala at a Spanish language school; a month traveling throughout Cuba while meeting with church leaders along the way; and a month in Venezuela with leaders of the Pentecostal Church of Venezuela.
Today, Tom is especially interested in issues of evangelism within the progressive church and the social witness of the church in the context of our contemporary military-industrial American empire.
In his spare time, Tom enjoys running, playing guitar, hiking, and golf.
